Safety Tip of the Month

Welding Lead Safety

Repairing welding leads is almost a daily occurrence for most steel erectors. Repairs to leads are legal in accordance with OSHA standards as long as the following items are addressed:

1. Make sure the lead is not energized. Unplug it from the welder before you service it.

2. Do not make any repairs within 10 feet of the electrode holder ("stinger"). It is illegal to so. If there is damage within 10 feet of the electrode holder, the entire section must be replaced.

3. Do not use conductive material to cover up cuts or splices. Duct tape is a bad choice for repair material because it can conduct electricity.

4. Keep an eye on the repairs you have made. Repairs can often come undone through normal wear and tear. Don't leave workers exposed to bare conductors!

This welding lead has 2 problems with it. It has repairs within 10 feet of the electrode holder and the repairs have been made with duct tape.
Welding leads are required by OSHA to be free from repairs within 10 feet of the stinger.

Proper Personal Protective Equipment should be used when welding. Notice this worker is wearing a welding shield, leathers and he has a fire extinguisher nearby his hot work.
